Este curso enfatiza en la necesidad de prepararse si usted vive en área de huracanes. Recordemos que estos fenómenos naturales tienen el potencial de producir apagones de larga duración pues, con frecuencia, los vientos destruyen la infraestructura eléctrica que en gran medida es aérea.

También se proveen guías sobre las opciones disponibles para generación eléctrica que normalmente provee la Autoridad de Energía Eléctrica. Este curso tiene como finalidad crear consciencia sobre la energía solar como una opción para satisfacer parte de la carga eléctrica luego de un huracán, con el beneficio añadido de que puede ayudar a reducir la factura del servicio.

También se enfatizará en la necesidad de utilizar interruptores de transferencia (transfer switches) cuando se usa una planta de emergencia. Ese interruptor es necesario por motivos de seguridad, tanto para las personas que trabajan en la restauración de las líneas eléctrica, como para los ocupantes de la estructura ya que reduce los riesgos de sufrir choques eléctricos e incendios.
